The PROBST (Personnel Rating Office Based on Structured Techniques) or Graphic Rating System is a traditional method used in performance appraisal to assess and evaluate the performance of employees based on predefined criteria. In this system, supervisors or managers rate employees on various job-related factors using a graphic scale or rating form.
The rating form typically consists of a series of performance dimensions or attributes, such as job knowledge, communication skills, teamwork, and productivity. Each dimension is accompanied by a rating scale, often represented graphically as a continuum or numerical scale, ranging from low to high levels of performance.
Supervisors evaluate employees' performance by indicating their assessment on the rating scale for each dimension, typically using checkmarks, ratings, or scores. The ratings are then totaled or averaged to calculate an overall performance score for each employee.
While the PROBST/Graphic Rating System provides a structured approach to performance appraisal and allows for easy comparison of employees' performance, it has limitations. These include subjectivity in ratings, lack of specific feedback, and potential bias in evaluation. Therefore, many organizations supplement or replace this system with more comprehensive and objective appraisal methods.
