Burnout
Burnout is a psychological condition characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment as a result of chronic stressors in the workplace. It often occurs in professions that involve high levels of emotional labor, such as healthcare, education, and customer service.
Emotional exhaustion refers to feelings of being drained, depleted, and overwhelmed by work-related demands, leading to physical and emotional fatigue. Depersonalization involves adopting cynical or detached attitudes toward work and clients, resulting in interpersonal distancing and reduced empathy. Reduced personal accomplishment manifests as feelings of incompetence, low self-efficacy, and diminished sense of achievement in one's work role.
Burnout can have serious consequences for individual well-being, job performance, and organizational effectiveness. It is associated with increased absenteeism, turnover, decreased job satisfaction, impaired cognitive functioning, and mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.
Preventing burnout requires addressing organizational factors such as workload, job control, social support, and recognition, as well as promoting self-care strategies and resilience-building techniques among employees.
