"Numinous" is a term coined by Rudolf Otto, a German theologian and philosopher, to describe the mysterious and awe-inspiring quality of religious or spiritual experiences. Derived from the Latin word "numen," meaning "divine power" or "presence of a deity," the numinous refers to the profound sense of the sacred or the divine that elicits feelings of awe, reverence, and fascination in individuals.
According to Otto, the numinous is characterized by a sense of "creature-feeling" or "creature-consciousness," wherein individuals perceive the presence of something greater than themselves, something transcendent and mysterious. The numinous often evokes a combination of fear and fascination, as individuals are simultaneously drawn towards and overwhelmed by the presence of the divine.
