The term "numinous" was coined by the theologian and philosopher Rudolf Otto to describe the experience of encountering the divine or transcendent reality. According to Otto, the numinous is marked by three key elements: the mysterium tremendum (awe-inspiring mystery), which evokes feelings of fear and trembling in the presence of the divine; the mysterium fascinans (fascinating mystery), which draws individuals towards the divine with a sense of attraction and fascination; and the sense of the numinous as wholly other, transcending human comprehension and categories.
