Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans documented cases of brain injuries and their effects on cognition and behavior. However, it was not until the Renaissance period that significant advancements were made in understanding the brain's role in behavior.

      In the 17th century, pioneers like Thomas Willis and René Descartes made notable contributions to neuropsychology. Willis conducted detailed anatomical studies of the brain and described its structures and functions, laying the groundwork for future research. Descartes proposed the concept of dualism, suggesting that the mind and body are separate entities, with the brain serving as the seat of the soul.

      The 19th century saw the emergence of phrenology, a pseudoscience that claimed personality traits and mental abilities could be determined by the shape and size of the skull. Neuropsychologists such as Kurt Goldstein and Alexander Luria conducted extensive studies on brain-injured patients, documenting their cognitive and behavioral deficits.

      These studies led to advancements in rehabilitation techniques for individuals with TBIs, emphasizing the importance of cognitive rehabilitation and functional reintegration. The World War era also spurred interest in understanding the neurobiological mechanisms of brain injuries, laying the groundwork for modern neuroimaging and neurosurgical interventions.

      The latter half of the 20th century saw rapid technological advancements that revolutionized neuropsychology. The development of neuroimaging techniques, such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), allowed researchers to visualize the structure and function of the brain in unprecedented detail. Positron emission tomography (PET) and functional MRI (fMRI) enabled researchers to map brain activity during cognitive tasks, further elucidating the neural correlates of behavior.

      In addition to technological advancements, theoretical frameworks such as connectionism and cognitive neuroscience have influenced modern neuropsychology. Connectionist models emphasize the interconnectedness of neural networks and their role in information processing, while cognitive neuroscience integrates cognitive psychology with neuroscientific principles to understand the neural basis of cognition and behavior.
